The AI-Augmented JD Edwards Developer

A practical framework for the next era of ERP development: bringing AI into the JD Edwards lifecycle under control, with deterministic automation kept clearly separate from real AI assistance.

InFocus 2026 · DenverSession P-05311660-minute Insights session

Core principle

AI belongs inside a controlled development lifecycle, not beside it. The framework treats AI as one participant in a governed process and keeps a hard line between deterministic automation, which must always behave the same way, and AI assistance, which drafts, suggests and accelerates.

The five layers

The layers run in order. Each one answers a single question before work moves to the next.

L1

Intent

What business outcome are we changing, and in which E1 objects?

Every change starts with a clear statement of the business requirement and the JD Edwards objects it touches. AI helps sharpen the requirement and map it to applications, UBEs and tables, but a person owns the intent.

L2

Generation

Where does AI draft, and where does deterministic tooling do the work?

AI drafts logic, test cases and documentation. Rule-based automation handles what should never vary. Keeping the two apart is what makes the output trustworthy.

L3

Validation

How do we prove the change is correct before it moves?

Generated work is tested like any other change, plus checks specific to AI output. Impact analysis and test design are where AI saves the most time and where review matters most.

L4

Execution

How does the change reach production safely and repeatably?

Changes move through a release pipeline with gates. Automation enforces status checks, sequencing and notifications so nothing ships out of order.

L5

Governance

Who owns this in a year, and how will we know if it drifts?

Governance extends ERP change management to cover AI: model versions, prompts, data exposure, drift and rollback. This layer stops AI Integration Debt from building up.

Scenarios covered in the session

  • AI-assisted E1 logic design from plain-language requirements
  • Impact analysis across dependent applications, reports and tables
  • Test design from requirements and change history
  • Documentation and runbooks generated alongside the change
  • A governed, intelligent release pipeline

Link to AI Integration Debt

The framework is the practice side of the AI Integration Debt research. Integrations that skip Validation and Governance are exactly the ones that turn into orphaned integrations, undocumented dependencies and governance voids.
